Terms of Use

All users have the ability and right to browse AGU article lists, including but not limited to, Papers in Press and Published Today. Additionally, all users can freely access abstracts and search journal content. Only an Institution subscriber (and its users), a Member subscriber, or an individual who pays for temporary access to an article may view, download, or print article content; for exceptions, see Prohibited Use.

Permitted Use of Licensed Materials

Institutional and Member subscribers may, in accordance with the copyright laws of the United States,

• make temporary local electronic copies by caching the material, but not to make duplicate copies available
• search, view, retrieve, and display material
• electronically save individual articles or items for personal use (but not in a systematic way)
• print off a copy of individual articles
• use figures, tables, and short quotes for republication in scientific books and journals so long as all sources are cited appropriately

In addition to the above, Institutional subscribers may

• allow the distribution of a copy of individual articles or parts of an article in printed format to other authorized users; this includes the distribution of printed copies for teaching purposes
• allow access from the server via secure network for authorized users, including from remote locations
• include articles in Electronic Reserve collections for use within the subscribing institution so long as the copies are deleted when no longer needed for the course; other incorporation in Course Packs requires AGU permission
• provide single, printed copies of single articles at the request of individual authorized users
• display, download, or print for internal marketing or testing or for training authorized users
• supply to an authorized user of another library

Prohibited Use of Licensed Materials

Neither the Institution (or its users) nor the Member subscriber may

• systematically make print or electronic copies of multiple extracts for any purpose
• remove or alter the authors’ names or the Publisher’s copyright notices or other means of identification or disclaimers as they appear
• provide, by electronic means, to a user at another library or elsewhere, a retained electronic copy of any article
• mount or distribute any article or part of an article on any electronic network, including the World Wide Web, other than the secure network controlled by an Institutional subscriber
